Implications of the Smar Grid Initiative on Distribution Engineering

Summary of project: The Smart Grid initiative and similarly named efforts are targeting the modernization of the electricity grid. However, the efforts have largely focused on the transmission system. A concerted effort for adapting the Smart Grid initiative for the distribution system is proposed with the following main approaches:

  • selective conversion to networked distribution system,
  • utilization of sensory signals at the local and hierarchically higher levels for both supervised and fully automated control,
  • development of enabling strategies and interconnection configurations for renewable resources at the distribution system level.
