Implications of the Smar Grid Initiative on Distribution Engineering

Summary of project: The Smart Grid initiative and similarly named efforts are targeting the modernization of the electricity grid. However, the efforts have largely focused on the transmission system. A concerted effort for adapting the Smart Grid initiative for the distribution system is proposed with the following main approaches:

selective conversion to networked distribution system,
utilization of sensory signals at the local and hierarchically higher levels for both supervised and fully automated control,
development of enabling strategies and interconnection configurations for renewable resources at the distribution system level.
